Posy Floral Design - Christmas Poinsettia Plant

The plant in the image is a Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima), a popular houseplant, especially during the holiday season due to its vibrant red and green foliage. The colored parts, often mistaken for flower petals, are actually modified leaves called bracts.

Care Instructions

  • Light: Place your poinsettia in a well-lit room where it can receive at least six to eight hours of bright, indirect sunlight daily. Avoid direct sun, which can burn the leaves, and rotate the plant occasionally for even growth.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Allow excess water to drain completely from the bottom of the pot, and be sure to empty any collected water from the saucer or decorative wrapper to prevent root rot.
  • Temperature: Maintain a stable room temperature, ideally between 65°F and 75°F (18-24°C) during the day and slightly cooler at night. Keep the plant away from cold drafts (e.g., from doors or cold windows) and excessive heat sources (e.g., radiators or fireplaces), as sudden temperature changes can cause leaves to drop.
  • Fertilizing: Fertilization is not necessary while the plant is in bloom during the holiday season. If you plan to keep the plant long-term, you can begin feeding it with a balanced, all-purpose houseplant fertilizer in the spring once new growth appears.

Quick Facts

  • Origin: Poinsettias are native to Mexico and Central America.
  • Toxicity: While the plant's sap can cause skin irritation in some people (especially those with latex allergies), it is only mildly toxic if consumed and not as poisonous as commonly believed. It's still wise to keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
  • Reblooming: Getting a poinsettia to rebloom in subsequent years is a meticulous process that requires a strict schedule of complete darkness (12–14 hours daily) for several weeks in the autumn to trigger the color change in the bracts
